Homesteading

Heide Gourmet started from the homesteading of Farm Heide on Rondeberg Road, off the N7 just outside Cape Town.

We are highly conscious of the declining food standards and the negative impact of preservatives and cost-cutting additives. To counteract this, we have chosen to produce all our consumables using traditional methods, completely free from modern preservatives and additives. Recognizing that expertise comes with practice, we began selling our surplus items.

The enthusiastic reception and positive feedback from our foodie friends, who have discerning tastes, served as great motivation to continue crafting goods that consistently surpass their expectations.

What you can expect from us

Introducing our range

You can anticipate a delightful assortment of homemade goodness from our diverse range of products, crafted with care by ourselves and our talented friends.

Indulge in our delectable 25% rye sourdough bread, meticulously baked using stone ground, unbleached flour. This bread is freshly made, resulting in a lead time of approximately 3-4 days. Our sourdough undergoes a slow fermentation process of at least 16 hours and is expertly baked in a wood-fired pizza oven. Nothing compares to the flavour and texture of wood-fired sourdough bread.

Our dairy selection features feta, ricotta, and mozzarella, with camembert, cheddar, and parmesan soon to be added.

When it comes to our charcuterie offerings, we prepare:

  • cured loin with either a chili or pepper crust
  • capicola (plain or with chili crust)
  • pancetta
  • German-style cold smoked belly bacon
  • Canadian-style hot smoked shoulder bacon
  • Hot smoked ham
  • brawn sausage (Schwartenwurst)
  • traditional viennas
  • leberkäse
  • mett wurst
  • crackling paté
  • lard
  • chorizo
  • and much more…

Due to our limited production capacity and the lengthy curing process required for certain products, we create only a few items at a time. Some of our offerings demand an extended duration to reach optimal quality. To secure your desired product, we kindly request that you pre-order, ensuring availability and reserving your place in line. Many of our products have a long shelf life, lasting up to several years when stored under the appropriate conditions. To ensure you always have enough to satisfy your cravings, we recommend ordering an ample quantity that will last you through those moments when the desire strikes.

As demand increases, we will scale up production accordingly, prioritizing the maintenance of exceptional quality over rapid expansion.

We encourage you to regularly visit our Products page to stay updated on the current availability of our offerings.

Our Lifestyle, Your Experience

Homesteading

“Homesteading is a lifestyle of self-sufficiency. It is characterized by subsistence agriculture, home preservation of food, and may also involve the small scale production of textiles, clothing, and craft work for household use or sale.

Modern homesteaders often use renewable energy options including solar and wind power. Many also choose to plant and grow heirloom vegetables and to raise heritage livestock. Homesteading is not defined by where someone lives, such as the city or the country, but by the lifestyle choices they make.”
